I applied for Curzon Gateway as my first choice through Birmingham City University. I currently pay £117 a week, which is pretty much the max of my budget. Block A, where my flat is, is the freshers only block. All I can say is your in for an interesting experience. Genuinely I have never lived somewhere, where a lift has broken down so often. I'm not saying like every few months. I'm talking every week without fail, the lift will break, reception and maintenance will say they are waiting for a part to fix it and then it will work for 3-5 days max before it breaks again and is broken for 2 weeks. When I moved in the lift wasn't working, so I had to lug all my stuff up 3 flights of stairs. Not cool. In designing the building, clearly no one thought that vents in the corridors might be important. As a result if you're put in block A having a fan is necessary, just opening the window won't cut it, cause you're no longer living in England, you're in the ****** Caribbean . On the off chance that you do happen to leave a window open be prepared to be woken up by the trains arriving at the nearby stations at 5:30/6 am.

It's very very close to local amenities, shops, stations, bull ring, arcadian, hurst st etc. As well as BCU, literally 5 mins from door to door most likely, which is why it's so popular with BCU students. This is where Unite chooses to make it's money. If you don't book/re-book early and I mean really early, you're looking at a price jump from £117 - £131. They will charge you an extortionate rate because they know that they have enough demand to fill the rooms. Socially in freshers week there was a lot going on and I made friends with quite a few flats in the block, even going around for parties etc, throughout the year, it is what you make of it really. Packages are dealt with well and the cleaning staff are really nice, some of the receptionists though are left to be desired.

Curzon provide you with a duvet, pillow and mood light at the beginning of the year, which considering the ****ery of the lift and other issues with the building, (e.g poor security allowing for people to just walk in and punch holes in the walls of all 5 floors of A Block,), they'd let you at least keep the funky mood light as a sorry for the **** you've had to put up with. Nope.

I have lived here from September 2014 and will be living here until July 2015. So my thoughts... The rooms are good, they have a perfect amount of space and everything functions fine. Some of my flatmates have had a problem with bed springs and toilet seats but they were quickly fixed by the maintenance team. I live on the fourth floor which is good security wise however it gets extremely hot in the flat in the spring, summer and fall so make sure to bring a fan with you. You could just say, why not open the windows? Well to answer that the window opens a tiny amount due to the restrictor. I will get all my complaints over with now. The lift in Curzon hardly ever works. quite recently (during May) it breaks everyday and somebody will fix it and it will break the same day. Its not too handy when you have to haul your food shopping or suitcase up to floor 4. I ask at reception and i just get a "the company has been notified. It seems that when they fix it they just make sure it works but they don't fix the main problem. This accommodation is close to the university however, it is a bit of a trek to the shops in the town centre. The positives about this place is that the staff is really friendly and always happy to help. They try to organise events such a petting zoo's (which only had rabbits and chickens) and we have had several free Zumba Classes that have been organised. All in all, its not a bad place to live however, next year i am living at Jennings Court as they are a built in shop, plus subway, plus coffee place. Compared to Curzon which has vending machines.

if you book early and before everyone else your room will definitely be worth the money. I pay £119 a week for a standard room which leaves me with hardly any student loan left to cover my food bills and course materials. The management are okay, some of the reception staff seem to make out like its a massive chore for you to report an issue or ask for post but others are lovely, particularly the friendly cleaning staff who always say hello. The reception area/common room is kept well cleaned and it is nice to have a fortnightly cleaner who scrubs our kitchen well. I have been really happy with my first year of staying here and have booked a second year with a bigger room for the same price (I booked well ahead) and the location is so perfect for the campus and it's a 10 min walk into town which is brill!!

I lived here last year in a classic ensuite, I booked a studio without really considering it properly because of the pressure unite and the receptionists were putting on us to rebook but my god it was a mistake. For the same price as this dull, dark, loud room I could have had a private flat... The walls are so thin, I can even hear the lift going up and down from my bed. I've had multiple maintenance men just let themselves into my flat without even a knock. When the reception staff are there they aren't very helpful and security are almost never there. Anybody can just follow somebody through the doors (that's if the doors are working, which is rare) and from the amount of leaflets that get thrown under the door it's obvious that random people are getting in. The water is ridiculous. It's either cold or scalding hot, there is no in between. It costs so much and they can't even offer you a refund of rent if you leave early (private landlords do) and considering the tenancy lasts until July and uni is finished by May that's a lot of wasted money. The location is perfect for uni but the road is stupidly loud even with the windows closed and there have been more than one reported muggings just by the entrance.

This was my first choice accommodation when I first chose Birmingham City University. I didn't really know how expensive things were, but £117 a week this year and then £131 a week is just a bit ridiculous. It is open during the summer for £80 per week, so I don't see why they can lower it to under £100. I am living here again next year purely because it is so convenient. 5 mins from bed to lecture theatre, 15 minutes from town - its one for the lazy people (like me). During the colder months it is DEAD - the only people who seem to socialise are the smokers.

As a first year student, I chose halls because Curzon is near to my university and the city centre. I was desperate in looking for a place to stay so at first thought nothing of the £128 per week charge. Now I know what a mistake this was. Curzon is boring, nobody really communicates and there are none of those parties or anything - I'm not a massive partier but there is NO atmosphere. When the staff behind the reception are actually there, they don't really do much. No friendly hello or will to help you. The accomodation itself is FREEZING and this applies to all water supply, the heating turns itself off after half an hour so you're up all night cold and turning it on again. Kitchen facilities are weak, our kettle has been broken since moving in and our 'sofa' had burn holes in it which haven't been addressed despite filling in various forms. Curzon is perfectly situated but so not worth the money, I could stay in a hotel every night for the same price.
