Worst Year of My Life

0.5

Quality of rooms - 0.5 Fun/Atmosphere - 0.5 Location - 1

I lived here last year as a first year student. Straight off the bat, when being welcomed in, it felt cold and unfriendly. When I got showed into my room, there was just pure disappointment. It looked cheap and because of the sheer amount I was paying for it, I was ripped off.

Now, obviously, these are halls and I wasn't expecting much but I was given a shoe box room with the tiniest window and no light. The carpet was plastic-like and cheap and held dust terribly and smelt awful. The bathroom was falling apart, the electric shower was very very temperamental, the entire bathroom was just gross looking. My bed was a tiny single bed with a the most uncomfortable mattress. The good thing about my room was a full length mirror and sturdy desk. The walls were so thin I could hear my flatmate fart in his sleep. Also, my wardrobe was an airing cupboard with a pole across it with absolutely no light.

Now, onto the kitchen/living area. The kitchen was a giant let down (are you seeing a trend here?). It was nothing like the pictures and it immediately became evident that the nice little modern decorations on the website do not come with the flat. On the first day, our oven actually broke. A month or so later, the kettle broke. As the year went on, the incredibly cheap fridge/freezer stopped cooking and freezing things and (you guessed it!) broke. There were two positives about this kitchen: once every 2 weeks we had a cleaner and they provided a kettle and toaster. The kitchen was basic to say the least and in the summer, the room was boiling. The living area portion of the room was also a let down. The sofas were ugly, plastic and uncomfortable. Not really somewhere you'd want to spend your time.

The atmosphere, as a first year student, was very poor. The main population of The Railyard was international students and I wasn't informed of this. Other students will understand that being put in a flat with international students isn't the most social and can be very isolating but luckily I wasn't. I was, however, put in a flat with 2 first year girls, 1 third year girl and an international male student in his late 20s. Overall, I wasn't happy that this wasn't disclosed to me at all, no information about any of my flatmates was given to me which made the whole experience very daunting for an 18 year old. No staff attempted to get first year students from other flats to socialise; in order to make friends you had to sit outside at night in the freezing cold and wait for someone to sit down to have a cigarette. Not my idea of fun.

The initial selling point for me was that it was gated but the gate conveniently broke just before I arrived in September. On Halloween, a group of kids actually got into our BUILDING because there was literally no security.

There was a car park but no one could use it (despite it always being empty) because it belonged to the people living in the block of flats opposite us. And because of that, we did not get a key to open the car gate so we would have to call security every time we wanted to leave or enter with a car which made my parents visiting very long and awkward.

Overall, I hated it. If you're someone going into first year and want to have fun, there are so many better accommodations out there that are still so close to uni. I don't usually write reviews but I'm writing this because if I can save 1 person from this place and the mental health issues it gave me purely due to isolation, it'll be worth it. I'm now at different private halls (Europa) and I could never go back to The Railyard. The atmosphere is fun and friendly, the staff are amazing, the flats are lovely and I'm sad I wasn't here for my first year.
