An Excellent Option!

4.5

As a postgraduate student who moved to Manchester in September not knowing anyone, Langdale Hall couldn't have been a better choice. I was looking for safe, well-managed accomodation with a bike shed, which was good value and located close to The University of Manchester. Not only have all my expectations been met and even surpassed, but I have had some great flatmates, who have really made the experience complete.

The staff are friendly, welcoming and available to answer any queries. Moreover, they have been kind and considerate during an extended period of illness, going well above the call of duty. My room was exactly like the pictures that I was shown, with the exception that it did not contain a chest of drawers. When I raised this with the management, I was immediately supplied with a replacement. The carpet was also new when I moved in.The oven in the shared kitchen was repaired with promptness and professionalism after it was reported on the designated online interface.

The kitchen, whilst small, is adequate, and the bathroom is kept clean by respectful flatmates and a lovely cleaning lady. I have felt safe both within the building and walking in the surrounding area. Yes, there are the usual problems associated with student halls such as occasional disruption from other less considerate students at night, but overall I have had a wonderful year in Langdale Hall and would certainly recommend it to others.

As a final point, in reference to previous comments, this review form asks you to submit a University email address to verify that you are a student: there is no way that this could be corrupted by the management system.

Excellent value and a great option!

I'd like to compile a list of all the glorious things that Langdale Halls has to offer:

Mice infestations? Check.

Multiple robberies despite their "excellent on-site security"? Check.

Workmen using leaf blowers on the roof, not actually blowing anything, just being insanely annoying and ear drum abusive at 8am? Check.

A state of the art cinema and common room, with brilliant facilities that you can't use because the care taker locks it at his own leisure? Check.

Promises from management of various future improvement that don't come to fruition for months, if at all? Check.

Possibly the most unstable wifi connection in the history of wifi connections that is so incredibly awful that when it's "connected" it's just a ruse, as you age millennia waiting for a page to load? Check.

Leaky Roof? Check.

Vending machine that swallows your money? Check.

Call out charge for the care taker that LIVES THERE ANYWAY? Check.

Cost to get a key cut at a locksmith: £5-10. Cost to get a new key for Langdale Halls: £50.

Paper-thin walls and ceilings? Check.

Stylish blocks that capture all the beauty of a Japanese prisoner of war camp? Check.

Large security gates for said prison camp left open all day enabling anybody to walk in as they please? Check.

Food thieves? Check.

Someone throws up after a heavy Friday night? Yeah, that's not getting cleaned until Monday.

Showers overflowing and leaving the whole of the toilets on one floor completely flooded? Check.

Slow response to maintenance issues? Check.

I'm sure I could continue with the above list, however I could do with a bit of sleep before the leaf blower alarm clock rudely awakens me in the morning.

Here's a list of the good things about Langdale Hall:

Some of the people I live with are okay.

Great Student Living

I moved to Manchester in 2014 with my current flatmate for university. We had a look at several properties offered by private landlords which frankly, were pretty dire. We found Njoy online and had a look at Langdale and Carfax Court (Annexe). We chose a two bedroom ground floor flat, with kitchen and bathroom inclusive.

The property itself is somewhat old, but necessary measures have been taken to make sure that all rooms are comfortable. My room came with furniture, mattress and a sink - more than enough for student living. The kitchen and bathroom were well equipped and had a constant supply of hot water. Rent was cheap and bills were all inclusive. The property benefits from university internet both UoMWifi and Eduroam, meaning we had pretty fast internet! The laundry area served its purpose, 2 coin-operated washers and a dryer. Residents seem friendly and I have no problems with any of them this academic year. The management enforces good control over anti-social behaviour so I don't expect there to be anything wild except for the occasional social party etc.

Overall the stay was convenient, it was economical, near Uni, had car parking space, sufficient heating and would recommend to early year students (probably not to postgraduate or final year undergrads). The management and caretaker are all approachable and take concerns very seriously. Would recommend, no major concerns had a good stay for 2 years.

Overall, my time at Langdale Hall has been positive. I am a third year student at Manchester Metropolitan University.

I have lived at in the main building of Langdale Hall (Downton Abbey) for two years whilst studying in Manchester. The building itself is a grade two listed property situated within Victoria Park. It has been the ideal study location for me as there are social events but at the same time it is quite for me to conduct my studies. Over my time here I have seen the buildings improve dramatically, through the conversation of the common room from an un-used space to a state of the art cinema and games room.

I currently have a ensuite room which is well furnished and reasonably priced. The kitchen and living area is large and comes with a T.V meaning there was no hassle sorting a T.V licence. Any problems that I have had with my room have been fixed quickly as they have an onsite maintenance team as well as onsite caretaker who is available 24/7 to help with any issues I may have.

Langdale Hall is located a 2-minute walk from Oxford Road making it easy to get a bus to and from University.

Other reviewers unfairly criticise the staff. This is not a fair reflection. Members of staff are friendly and helpful. You are able to have a joke with them but at the same time talk to them about any issues you have with your room. In addition, they notify you through text when you receive a parcel, which is an effective system.

To conclude, I feel that Langdale Hall is a good value halls of resistance. I have felt welcomed by all staff and students alike and would definitely recommend it to others

Anyone who has been on this website in the last two days has probably noticed that the first three reviews are all negative and depict an inadequate standard of living at Langdale Hall.

Strangely, after the last negative review was posted, two more, extremely positive reviews were posted. What a coincidence you may think? Wrong, this place is marinated in corruption. I, along with the two "main-building dwellers", who so warmly spoke of this "accommodation", do not feel about this place the way these two do. These two positive reviews are 100% illegitimate and are a poor attempt from the staff at trying to neutralise their reputation. It will not work.

It is your choice if you move here. All I can say is do not trust this place. Behind a facade of a well-run establishment lies 200 people wishing they had never made the decision to move to Langdale Hall.

Good experience

Quality of rooms - 3.5 Fun/Atmosphere - 4.5 Location - 4

Overall I’ve had a good year at Langdale Hall. I’m a Masters student at the Uni of Manchester, and have had a double room in the main building.

As a postgraduate student, I was looking for quiet, convenient and affordable accommodation, but with the possibility of meeting sociable people. In this regard, Langdale has been excellent. I’ve made good friends with flatmates, all other postgraduate students. Like any student halls, there are times when you’ll hear people stumbling back at night, but on the whole there’s little hassle. I’ve never been woken up in the mornings by garden work.

The main building is old but characterful, and any issues are mostly minor and are addressed quickly. My room has all the furniture I need, and is a good size. The shared kitchen in our flat is small, but we make do, and have a separate dining room. There are always spare toilets or showers on other floors available at busy times. The cinema room, games room, gardens and tennis court are all well kept.

Criticism of the staff in other reviews is extremely unfair, and ungrounded from my experience. There’s a friendly and pro-active team in reception in the weekdays, and an on-site caretaker who responds to problems at any times of the day or night. Maintenance issues reported in an evening are responded to the next morning.

It’s a 20 – 30 min walk to UoM down Oxford Road past shops and the hospital, and there’s a bus stop on Oxford Road 3 mins walk. There’s always parking space available if needed.

Overall then, Langdale Hall has been good value accommodation. It has some of the usual student hall problems, but if you want it can be more sociable than other halls I’ve heard of, and there’s great facilities with competent staff.

Moved to Langdale in the summer. It started off fine- I was in the "grade II listed building" they advertise. However, I was moved to the blocks behind that look like something out of an Eastern Eurapean horror film. The rooms are awful and depressing, unless you're in a refurbished one, in which you will be in a slightly nicer environment. There is drilling, building and leaf blowing every other day, and work begins at 8.00, so don't think you will ever sleep beyond then. The location is fine, you have to get buses everywhere, and you can't walk alone due to the real possibility of being mugged. The staff are an absolute joke. When things are stolen, they blame the residents. When things are broken, they blame the residents. They look for any way in which they can con money out of you: I.e if you wake the one on-site caretaker up while he's sleeping, you'll be charged.

My year her has been one of the worst. Do not make the mistake of living here. This place needs to be shut down!

Quality of rooms - 1 Fun/Atmosphere - 1.5 Location - 2.5

My room is nothing like the one I was shown when I came to view the halls. Storage is a joke. Various issues when I first moved in such as no toaster and no working kettle. I was also shown a large kitchen when I viewed, but have been allocated a nasty small one. It is way too small for any kind of socialising. Due to the lack of storage my room just looks horrible as I have nowhere to put everything and is not nice to be in.

The furniture is completely different to the room I was shown, even though I was told my room would be newly renovated and "exactly the same".

Some of the staff are condescending. There are two that are really nice though. One good thing is that maintenance responds quickly, and theres a table tennis table, pool table and foosball table in the common room. I'm just very unhappy with my actual room and kitchen.

Another thing: multiple people on my floor with rooms facing outwards have had their laptops stolen, even with their windows shut.

I was pretty much forced into living at Langdale after my previous arrangements fell through, quite frankly this place is disgusting and I wouldn't live here again if they paid me. Contrary to Njoy's description of Langdale Halls, most of the rooms are not in the main Grade II listed building, but in a shabby, run down council flat esque building at the rear of the main building. The rooms look as though they haven't been refurbished since the 1970's, the windows are covered in rot and mold and my room had a large amount of damp coming through in one corner of the room. The bathrooms are constantly flooded and the toilets are disgusting. The management are extremely incompetent and condescending and give you an extremely vague idea of pretty straight forward things for example rent payment dates. Avoid this place and any other run by Njoy Student Living, I've heard horror stories about Carfax Court too.
