Quality of rooms - 4.5 Fun/Atmosphere - 0.5 Location - 1
Safety - 1.5 Management - 1 Value - 3

Two years I've stayed at this accommodation due to missing the windows for other properties, so after all that time I feel I can give a pretty good run down on the above criterion:

- Fun/Atmosphere: I don't think it's normal to feel scared to use your own kitchen. It's happened in both of my flats here, everyone is from a different place, with a different culture and it's incredibly hard to fit in anywhere, most people will ignore you probably due to language barriers and it leaves a cold impression.

- Safety/Value: Anyone can walk in from the street and follow anyone to outside of a flat, I've tested it to the point where you can be outside of where students are staying without interference. Value wise it does have good rooms and services for the price.

- Location/Management: The only redeeming factor about the location is that their is a McDonalds next door. All the universities are a good walk away, the nearest supermarket is a good 30 minute walk away which isn't much but when carrying your shopping it is. The other issue is that it is right next to a busy main road and as the windows aren't insulated well you will hear ambulance and police every 30 minutes from the nearby stations... I just heard one then.

Please find somewhere else to stay in, otherwise every other thing in the accommodation will give you a reason to wish you did.

Although clv was not my first choice I still hoped it would at least be a safe place to live

? security is terrible

? a lot of things in our flat are broken and clv won't do anything about it e.g. our fridge has been broken since we moved in and they refuse to fix it

? they messed up mine and my friends direct debit debit and resulted in us having to pay more

? the staff at the desk have no idea what's going on half the time and arent helpful in the slightest

Unsafe acommodation

1

Quality of rooms - 1 Fun/Atmosphere - 0.5 Location - 3

Don't stay here if you want good value for money and safe acommodation. Security is shocking, anyone can basically access the building, there was an assault on the property staff didn't even mention to us, kitchens have been raided and security basically don't care.

Kitchens are grubby and old.

You would be better off staying elsewhere take it from me!

UoB Disaster

0.5

Quality of rooms - 2.5 Fun/Atmosphere - 0.5 Location - 1.5
Safety - 3.5 Management - 4 Value - 1.5

Being in these halls nearly made me drop out of university. In fresher's it is really hard to get to know people, you are totally isolated from university life, people tend to walk to lectures together from the vale and form friendship groups like that, meaning it is harder for you to settle in. Does not at all have the halls feeling, there is no openness or casualness about knocking next door. Finding English speaking people of your own age is a struggle as most of them are mature students studying their masters from across the globe.

I also find myself walking home alone from nights out because noone else has accomodation anywhere near here, as a female and being in the centre of Birmingham late at night, this is not ideal.

The only good thing about this is how close it is to the Christmas markets and New Street station so that you can go home!

All in all I have been counting down the days till I leave this place and am thoroughly looking forward to living surrounded by students next year.

Quality of rooms - 3 Fun/Atmosphere - 2.5 Location - 4.5

Clv is in a great location, it's really close to the city centre, including New Street station. It's a 25 minute walk to BCU South Campus. The management are great and will resolve any issues you have. Considering how much it costs, the rooms could be a bit nicer - bedrooms/bathrooms are okay in size, not much to comment on. Carpets could do with changing as well as the mattresses. The kitchen/living room has little counter space and it gets quite crowded if two people are trying to cook! Safety isn't great, you need a lot of fobs to get in through the multiple doors, but as there are people going in and out 24/7, it's really easy for someone off the street to walk in behind,

Quality of rooms - 1 Fun/Atmosphere - 1 Location - 2.5

Location great and management/maintenance are decent. Rooms are adequate, but disgusting carpets and kitchens are not great; good space but ovens/appliances aren't.

Laundry room is always left in a state and poor management of facilities means a lot of conflicts.

Security is okay if you ring them but they seem to let anyone in to the buildings and don't tend to follow up complaints properly.

Definitely prefer IQ!

Better halls than any others I've visited

4

Quality of rooms - 5 Fun/Atmosphere - 5 Location - 3.5
Safety - 5 Management - 5 Value - 4

Those who deem the rooms unacceptable, clearly haven't experienced much in the way of university halls. Every room at CLV has an ensuite which is a huge advantage. They are spacious, clean, light and all furniture is in a good condition. Although I only have the standard single room, double rooms are available and there's a free gym downstairs. It is true, however, that CLV is costly, but I believe the quality of the rooms makes up for it. Maintenance has always acted on my request the same day and I must admit I'm surprised to read that people find the reception staff unfriendly, I have always found them pleasant and responsive. What's more I haven't seen a better view of the city from any other building in Birmingham. I think it's a great place to live.

Not good for UoB students

1.5

Quality of rooms - 4.5 Fun/Atmosphere - 0.5 Location - 1
Safety - 2 Management - 0.5 Value - 1.5

I'll start off with a positive, the rooms are pretty spacious and beds are quite big compared to most halls (in standard plus rooms). Plus it's nice to have an ensuite, even though the shower drainage is terrible. However, for the price it's not as good as you'd expect. Considering we are paying £123 a week the furniture in the kitchen/lounge is ripped, uncomfortable and faded - I can't imagine they've been replaced in at least 5 years. The location is only good for getting to new st or city centre, for a UoB student like myself it is far too far from the uni (at least 30 min walk) and you feel cut off from the rest of halls. Clv is mostly BCU and Conservatoire students so it's a bit rubbish being UoB there. The staff at reception aren't very welcoming and seem to be pretty incompetent. Overall I would recommend any UoB student to stay somewhere, anywhere else if only for a much better social life. You don't really get what you pay for.

Better than expected

3.5

Quality of rooms - 3.5 Fun/Atmosphere - 4.5 Location - 4
Safety - 4.5 Management - 3 Value - 2

Although clv wasn't my first choice, it's much better than I thought it would be when I moved here. The rooms are quite nice and the en-suite bathroom is really handy. Kitchen's are fairly big, and there's never been a problem between me or my flatmates when cooking; there's plenty of space for you all to store your food & live well. Although it isn't the closest place to uni, it's not too far away; and it is right next to the bus stop. Along with this, McDonald's is across the street and the main high street is 10 minutes away, so for shopping trips or nights out, you can easily make the walk without needing a taxi. There is a free gym that is nearly always open, and a common room with a flat screen TV & pool table. There are often events in the common room such as movie nights or special occasions like when the Superbowl was on or during halloween there was a party there.
Overall it's a great place to live really; although it is a bit pricy :/

The location of CLV was crappy for my course (city centre campus at BCU). Living here has been an underwhelming experience for me, I really wouldn't have an issue if the customer service of the reception wasn't so damn poor. So many things happened with my room/rent, none of which have been rectified with the reception as they've literally been taking MONTHS to respond to my requests which is f**king ridiculous, I really wouldn't recommend this place to anyone unless you study music or near city south campus like my flatmates did. Other than that, an absolute s**thole tbh.

2

Quality of rooms - 4 Fun/Atmosphere - 1 Location - 1.5

The location of CLV is poor, although it is close to the city centre, it is far away from the universities. Before I moved in it said that the university of birmingham was a 15 minute walk but turns out its 35-40 minutes. Not only this but living in CLV you are cut off from most university life. It's very unsocial and would recommend you go in university halls insted. Staff are also quite rude. The only positive thing I can say is the rooms are very nice and modern although a little expensive.

Quality of rooms - 3 Fun/Atmosphere - 1.5 Location - 3.5

clv Birmingham, is not a great place to stay. Before moving in residents were promised a swimming pool. This was then swiftly removed a week after we moved in, and replaced with music practice rooms which not everyone has access to.
Also there was not the promised laundry facilities in each block, and often during the year the laundry facilities have been broken down, and not fixed for days.
The common room facilities has no toilet, and just one TV which for the majority of my time wasn't able to show the Sky Sports package residents were promised. There is a pool table which is not free.

The flats are good, and have a reasonable amount of room. However it isn't possible to open a window in the kitchen, and the extractor fan is not effective enough. The mattresses are not good if you aren't skinny.

The service level of the reception is way under what you would expect. Generally I was met with apathy, and service is ridiculously slow. We waited over 3 months for a key to our mailbox. We only got our keys, after we complained directly to the BCU Housing officer.

I pay £110/week for my single room at CLV. When I arrived, staff were rude to me and disorganised. Facilities in the room and flat all seemed to work OK, but none of the electrical equipment in my or my friends' flats has been PAT tested since 2012!! Cooker has broken since I've been here and the fuse box isn't safe.
Gym equipment is very old and breaks easily/often.

The only redeeming factors are the location and the friends I've made.
