Good accommodation, terrible management

I chose edge because of its location and I was drawn to the fact that it was a new building, which I figured would have little wrong with it. For the most part I was right, the location is excellent and the rooms are nice. The only real issue I've had with the room is the extreme change in temperature throughout the year. It must be badly insulated because in the winter is was freezing (long pjs, hoodie in bed under a duvet and blanket kinda cold), and the heating system runs on what appears to be a timer, you press a button and it switches on for however many hours. This meant that I would often wake in the night freezing, or go away for a few days and come back to an icy room because the button hadn't been pressed. Now that it's summer though it's the opposite. The room is boiling and the windows don't open full so there is little ventilation. I recommend a fan.

Apart from that the room is nice though and my main issue is with the management. They really let the whole place down. I find them rude and lazy, unwilling to help with issues with the room and slow about informing you on package deliveries. Their hours also appeare to have slowly decreased as the year has progressed. We have had a few major issues with the building, such as a pipe leaking, the front door not shutting and the whole laundry system failing and they were slow to react. The laundry for example broke on a Friday (which they knew about) but they pretended not to know until someone got in touch with them, by this time the weekend had already passed so a technician wasn't contacted until the beginning of the new week. All in all it took over a week for the machines to get fixed (machines that are used by over 70 people), all because they didn't want the hassle of aknowledging it before their weekend began. They also have made no effort in trying to get everyone living here together and help us bond. If one weren't proactive about meeting people I imagine it would feel very lonely.

All in all its not a bad place, just be prepared that management falls short. If you're cool with that though then location makes up for it big time.

The room is vastly different from the picture shown, in terms of size. And theres just so little space in the room. The wardrobe provided can store roughly about 10 hangers worth of clothes and you would have to fold the rest of your clothes. The toilet is roughly 2 square metre.

Now for the good part of this review, the edge's water heating system is great. The shower doesnt really run out of hot water no matter how long you run it for.

If you are willing to pay 200 quid a week for a tiny room in selly oak, why not pay about the same for a flat in the city, say orion / rotunda / cube etc.

Overpriced for the service received

I had really high expectations moving into Edge Apartments, it looked excellent on the website and the staff I spoke to at head office were very friendly and helpful.

However when I moved in my expectations did not match reality. The moving in process was very disorganised - they did not have a key cut for the room and look about 2 hours to get this cut which I had to wait around for, the lift was also not working and generally the staff on reception were a little rude and confused. Also on the second day there was a human sewage leak through out reception and much of the first floor which flooded many people's rooms which was an awful experience and Collegiate failed to refund the cost of damages.

The building is excellent though, the rooms are a little small (the pictures on the website are not of the actual building), but they are very modern and are quite homely. The location is also brilliant as it is just across the road from Birmingham University and despite being on the main road the rooms are very quiet for studying. It is just such a terrible shame that the service is so bad.
