Brilliant location, shame about everything

"Old, sterile building right next to the city centre, single beds, small rooms, high ceilings and it probably hasn't been repainted in about 20 years, I'd recommend any of the other Unite buildings"- Anonymous

This newly renovated property enjoys a great city centre location

Location

Londonderry House Birmingham has one of the best locations in the city as it's directly opposite Aston University. Only a 5 minutes walk away are the Technology Innovation Centre, Birmingham City University and Gosta Green campus. There is a bus stop outside from where you can get to the Perry Bar main campus in  just 15 minutes. Also within walking distance are the main railway station, The Bullring shopping centre and there's a supermarket 2 minutes from the property. This area caters well for students and you will find the usual requirements within the immediate locale including shops, bars and eateries.

Management

Whether you want directions to the nearest pizza place or an event is coming up that warrants a social event the team at Londonderry House are on the ball. Parents have no worries on the security side either as staff are on-site 24/7 and there is also a secure entry system and surveillance cameras.

Features

A lot of the student accommodations in the city are bigger than Londonderry House Birmingham but we think this adds to its appeal. There is a range of en-suite rooms available within 4, 5 and 6 bed flats as well as several self contained studios giving you the option of living with friends or independently. All rooms have three quarter beds, modern furnishings and plenty of storage. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout so you can browse the net or chat online both in your room and the great communal spaces. Residents have access to the gym at the neighbouring The Heights residence and there are plenty of vending machines of you fancy a snack. Add in a laundry facility and bike storage and you have everything you need.

Although the building has been recently refurbished, it retains an old, rundown character with little in the way of modernity (except for the kitchens perhaps). The lifts are out of action most of the time, not ideal when considering the first accommodation floor is 9 floors up and the highest is 16 floors up! Security is extremely poor, as demonstrated by the fact that despite them promising a 24/7 security coverage, the security staff are nowhere to be seen and the common room TV was stolen twice, along with some personal possessions from the rooms. Despite having paid for the premium room, the bathroom is still the same size as the other rooms and by that, I mean small! There is barely room to maneuver and the shower curtain sticks to you every time you have a shower, along with the occasional pungent smell from the plug holes, which seems to come from other bathrooms connected on the same pipes. There is not even any additional storage space with the premium room, so you are paying far more for just a little more floor space, it's a scam! Reception hours is very poor compared to other accommodation providers, with no service at all at the weekends and often being closed to allow staff to cover other Unite properties. Staying here, you really get the feeling that Unite students do not care about the residents (who have paid well over the odds!) here and that they would rather look after those at the Heights and Curzon Gateway.

The only positive I can possibly think of is the location, which is 5 mins from the nearest shops (Sainsbury's and Tesco), 10 mins walk from Aston and BCU and a 10-12 min walk from New Street, Moor Street and Snow Hill stations.

Therefore, I would not recommend this place to anyone, especially those on a budget, you will find much better service and atmosphere in other accommodation blocks!
