Embrace the Power of Now

When we’re young, it’s easy to feel invincible, as if we have all the time in the world. The future seems endless, and there’s a quiet belief that we’ll have countless tomorrows to achieve our goals, fix mistakes, and take risks.

But what if that’s an illusion?

Why wait until tomorrow? Embrace the Power of Now

The truth is, that life can be unpredictable, and waiting could mean missing out on meaningful personal and professional opportunities.

This isn’t about being pessimistic; it’s a reminder that each day is a chance to act with purpose and intention. Imagine what you could accomplish if you focused on what matters now instead of putting things off for later.

Here’s where Stoicism, an ancient philosophy, comes into play.

Stoic philosophy

The Stoics encouraged us to remember our mortality, not to depress us but to inspire us to live intentionally. The phrase Memento Mori — “remember you will die” — is a reminder to make the most of each day.

Roman Emperor and Stoic philosopher Marcus Aurelius put it simply:

“You could leave life right now. Let that determine what you do and say and think.”

These words challenge us to live and work with purpose, making the most of the present moment instead of waiting for the “perfect time.”

Consider how this mindset might change your approach to university life:

  • What projects would you start if you weren’t waiting for the “right moment”?
  • Who would you reach out to if you knew you might not get the chance later?
  • What values would you stand up for if you knew you couldn’t delay expressing them?

Stoic philosopher Seneca warned against the myth of someday, writing:

“You will hear many people saying: ‘When I am fifty I shall retire into leisure; when I am sixty I shall give up public duties.’ And what guarantee, pray, have you that your life will last longer?”

So let’s ask ourselves: What’s one thing we can do today to live more fully — to work and study with intention and authenticity?

Don’t wait for the “perfect time” — it may never come. The best time to start is now.

That’s all for today. Make the most of this moment.
