Kingston University, which traces its origins to Kingston Technical Institute founded in 1899 and gained university status in 1992, has four campuses across Kingston upon Thames: Penrhyn Road, close to the town centre and home to the Students’ Union and library; Knights Park, by the River Thames, home to Kingston School of Art; Kingston Hill, set in woodland near Richmond Park; and Roehampton Vale, home to engineering and computing. All campuses are connected by a free intersite bus service. The university covers arts, design, fashion, business, law, health, education, engineering, computing and the social sciences. Most students live in Kingston town centre and the surrounding residential areas, within easy reach of the Penrhyn Road and Knights Park campuses. Surbiton, immediately south of Kingston, is a popular option with good train connections and a quieter residential feel. New Malden and Tolworth, further south, are more affordable alternatives with bus connections to the university’s campuses. The university has over 2,300 rooms available in managed accommodation, with first-year undergraduates given priority.
Kingston upon Thames is in London Travelcard Zone 6, with frequent train services from Kingston station to London Waterloo in around 30 minutes. Surbiton station, a short distance away, has faster services to Waterloo in around 17 minutes. Local buses connect all four university campuses and surrounding student areas.
