Review your student accommodation and help the next student

Student writing a review of their student accommodation on a smartphone

Reviewing your student accommodation takes less than a minute, and it helps the next student make the same decision you had to make not long ago. Whether you’re in private student accommodation (PBSA) or university halls, here’s when to leave a review, what to write and why a good review counts just as much as a bad one.

Think back to when you were choosing where to live. You probably read what other students said about the place: what the rooms were really like, whether the Wi-Fi worked, how quickly things got fixed. Not the brochure, the real stuff.

Now you’re the one who knows. And you can do the same for someone else.

Got a problem? Report it first

If something’s not right, like a repair that’s taking ages or a washing machine that’s been broken for weeks, don’t go straight for the one-star review. Tell your accommodation team first, ideally in writing. An email is fine.

Most things get sorted once they’re reported properly. And if you’ve given them a fair chance and nothing’s happened? Then yes, put it in your review. That’s exactly what the next student needs to know.

Just try not to write it on the day you’re annoyed. A review written in a bad mood usually says more about your day than about the building.

Had a good experience? Say so

Most of us only leave reviews when something goes wrong. It’s the same with takeaways, hotels and online shopping.

The problem is that good places end up with fewer reviews, just because nobody bothers when things are going fine. If the staff have been helpful and the place has felt like home, it’s worth saying. It gives credit to the people who keep things running, and it gives the next student a fairer picture.

What to write about

You don’t need to write an essay. Just think about what you’d have wanted to know before you moved in:

  • Your room: was it comfortable, clean and quiet enough? How were the kitchen and laundry?
  • The staff: did they reply quickly? Were repairs, parcels and security handled well?
  • Living there: could you study properly? Did the atmosphere suit you?
  • Location: how easy was it to get to uni, the shops and a night out?

Mention the good and the not-so-good. A review that’s honest about both is the one people actually trust.

How to leave your review

Tip: mention one or two specific things, like how quickly a repair was fixed or how quiet it is for studying. That’s what the next student finds most useful.

Frequently asked questions

Should I leave a review if everything’s been fine?

Yes, definitely. Good experiences are the ones people forget to share. Your review helps balance things out and gives credit to the team behind a well-run building.

I’ve had a problem. Should I leave a bad review straight away?

Report it to your accommodation team first and give them a fair chance to sort it. If it’s still not fixed, an honest review of what happened is fair and really useful for other students.

How long does it take?

Less than a minute. If you want to write a bit more, jot down a quick draft first and it’ll be even easier.

Will my email be published?

No. Your email is only used to verify your review. It’s never published.

Your turn

Not long ago, you were the one reading reviews and trying to picture what your new home would be like. Now you know, and a few honest lines from you could make someone else’s choice a lot easier.

Good, bad or somewhere in between, your experience counts. And when providers know students are reading, they have every reason to keep improving.
