Whilst the views from my room are spectacular, this is offset by the fact that I frequently lose access to water. This past week, there has been two days when no water was available meaning no tap, no shower and no toilet flush. This is something you would expect from the very worst accommodation and it escapes me how this accommodation can be one of the most expensive in Manchester. All this has occurred the weekend before exams....Sure the place looks great but when you start living here there are major problems.

Once you get over the good view of Manchester from the window of your room, you will soon realise that this accommodation is fraught with issues.

You will find yourself walking down 20 flights of stairs at midnight because a fire alarm was triggered.

You will find yourself with no water flowing to your taps and no toilet flush on several days of the year.

You will find your body slowly rotting away in the cement coffin with no openable windows that allows no fresh air into your room.

You will find yourself stuck (and I mean suspended over 20 stories) in a lift for hours on end.

Do not be deceived by the sophisticated presentation. My time here has been a nightmare of sorts that one would experience in the worst developing country.

Amazing location, so close to the city centre and really accessible in terms of transport.

The room was lovely with lots of storage and a great view of the city.

The staff were all really lovely and helpful my entire stay.

The only fault I could possibly find is the price - it is quite expensive but at the same time you will not find any better accommodation.

I cannot recommend it enough, I would go back in a heartbeat!

Room quality is superb. Everything one needs is provided social atmosphere lends itself for an amazing and fun experience during my stay. The various planned events are really good for meeting other students.

Location for me is great. Different bars and shops at my doorstep. Lively entertainment and very close to university.

In terms of safety, you can be assured Student Castle are on top of things. The 24 hours security checks out that there are no random individual on your floor.

Finally, I recommend Student Castle, as the quality of service provided can not be matched for the price you will be paying.

My experience in student castle is definitely one of the best. I've met a few of my best friends in here and I wish I could be staying here next year to relive everything again. The rooms provided in the castle are arguably the best, most mesmerising views of manchester and when it comes to quality of everything, i feel like I am living in a hotel, a castle to be specific. The security team is on the best I've seen all around. The reception and staff are the kindest people you can imagine. Events and special days are constantly showing up, keeping the students on the toes awaiting the next zumba class or national popcorn day! The common room is a good place to hangout but I've noticed that not all students spend their free time there which kind of affects the entire experience social-wise.

Nonetheless, Student castle is a great choice, you defiantly get what you pay for!

The only thing that i think is very bad is that there is no signal in my room on the third floor. The room is modern bit its better that the desk should be wider. The temperature in the room is quite cold because its between 22-24. There should be a heater in the room. All the things above are the drawbacks. Overall its nice.

Hello Lily

Thank you very much for your feedback, we do appreciate it.
I am sorry that you experienced an issue with your phone signal in the room. Usually phone companies can help with this by providing a booster for your room. I'm not sure if this was an option for your provider though.
The rooms here do have heating facilities and usually 24 degrees is very warm in the UK but we do appreciate that tenants staying with us from warmer climates may find this cooler.
We are very pleased that you think our halls are nice and thank you very much for your comments, they are very useful to us for making improvements where we can in the future.

The hall's management replied to this review:
Thank you for your feedback.
We are very sorry to hear that you have not enjoyed your stay at Student Castle.
We do limit the number of guests allowed in studio flats as we find that large gatherings tend to create noise complaints and can upset many people on that floor. We plan regular events for opportunities to mix in our common spaces and we have a large common area which can be sued for whatever you like, including parties and drinks etc.
We do also ask tenants to limit the amount of noise that they make after 11.00pm in the evening out of respect for other residents. We have students staying with us who are at all different stages of their University life and therefore we aim to provide a quiet space in the evenings to study or rest.
If you are concerned about items that are breaking in your room, please contact a member of staff. Our rooms are made up of mostly bespoke high quality furniture designs and as such, there should not be many breakages. We would be happy to look into this for you if you feel it is an issue.
If there is anything that we can do to make the rest of your stay with us better, please contact a member of staff.
Kind regards
Student Castle Manchester

Student Castle Manchester indeed is one of the best student accommodation in Manchester.

However, the management has a habit of intruding into your personal space:

1) Every year, there are at least THREE room checks conducted by the management team (Nov, March and June).

2) Contractors came into my room to check the stove on 1 occasion (requesting me to leave my room during Jan exam revision periods)

3) Maintenance team 'forced' me out of my room for a day (8am to 5pm) to replace the toilet tiles (of which I did NOT request for).

4) Contractors came into my room to check the smoke detector on 2 separate occasions (requesting me to leave my room during May/June exam revision periods).

5) Next week, the maintenance team will be 'invading' my room again to do their maintenance work. Again, during May/June exam revision period)

Worst of all, they do NOT give you a specific date or time because they argue that it is 'impossible' to know how fast or slow they or the contractors work. So on 2 occasions where the contractors came into my room, I was in the shower!

The reasons that they gave for doing all these intrusive checks and maintenance:

1) It is required under the "Health & Safety Regulations".

2) We check your rooms for cleanliness because it is for your own health and safety.

I have not heard of any other accommodations that are so demanding.

So if you are NOT comfortable with the number of occasions that the management at Student Castle 'intrudes' into your personal space/room, do NOT book Student Castle.

The benefits do NOT outweigh the disadvantages (at least for me).

The hall's management replied to this review:
Thank you for your feedback.

We are very sorry to hear that you have found our staff to be disruptive and that this has had a negative impact on your stay with us. This was certainly not our intention.

We do openly promote that we conduct termly room inspections and this is a part of living at our halls. We want to ensure that you are looking after both yourself and our lovely rooms ?

Some maintenance checks, for example, replacing bathroom floors, are carried out with your best interests in mind. We want to ensure that you are living in a room that is the same high standard that we aim to offer.

We do also appreciate that there are some maintenance checks which do require brief access to your room and that this is not something that many students particularly want. We do always endeavor to give lots of notice to let you know that we will be coming and we try, where possible, to give you a date or a time frame at the very least. These checks are for varying reasons. With such a large and complex building, we do have to carry out checks and tests to ensure the building continues to work efficiently and on some occasions for example with your smoke detector, this is required by law – but it is also to ensure your safety if a fire were to break out.

I hope that you can see that any disruption caused has not been deliberate but there are some things that do have to be done throughout the year and unfortunately it will mean some short bursts of access to your rooms on specified days.

If there is anything that we can do to make the rest of your stay with us easier, please contact a member of staff. If you have already left us, we wish you well for the future.

Kind regards
Student Castle Manchester

This place is a place I'd recommend very much to students as it ensures top notch security for us. Plus, it has a very friendly reception that is efficient and will inform us very much earlier in the case they will be closed. Even on days they are closed, security will be there who will provide us the basic services that the reception provides us such as lending a keycard in the case we are locked out. Furthermore, it ensures a lively and friendly environment through holding events and they always find ways to improve their establishment. They take complaints very seriously and are always improving because of that. The rumor of living in Studios alone can be very lonely is not a big deal as you may always just bring friends over as long as you monitor them well.

I came to student castle after spending a year abroad. As most of my friends had graduated, I didn't want to live with people that I didn't know and so decided to rent a studio. I'm so happy that I did.

For a start, these halls are very quiet. They are perhaps not the best place for first years hoping to make lots of new friends. As the other reviews have mentioned, its a place where international students tend to hang out together. That being said, the quiet atmosphere has been ideal for someone in my position who is looking for somewhere to live with little distraction to get on with my dissertation. I'd also say that there is the opportunity to be social if you want to be - there is a great common room with TV, pool tables, board games etc and the management works hard to put on events throughout the year. The management in general have been amazing - I haven't had any problem that I haven't managed to solve within 24 hours. As someone who gets ill often, the management were so supportive and even called my room regularly to check I was okay. This is great if you're planning to live alone.

In terms of safety, I know all the security guards and I haven't had any problems. Every student has a key card (like in a hotel) and you would have to have a card to get through reception, the lift and then your room. After living in Fallowfield for 2 years I feel much safer!

The rooms are great, exactly as advertised. They are expensive, but as I've been living here i've realised all the extras that the money goes towards - the gym, the security staff, plus all the extras that make student castle a little bit nicer - i.e. the dustbins get cleaned so they don't stink, and the windows get cleaned by abseilers!

I would definitely recommend living here if you already have a solid group of friends and you want to spend your second or third year not worrying about accommodation. This is the place to be!

Generally good

Quality of rooms - 3 Fun/Atmosphere - 1 Location - 5
Safety - 4 Management - 3.5 Value - 3.5

If you're looking for something modern in a good location, SC is a good place to be. However, I'd say that that's pretty much all you get here. As most of the rooms are studios, interaction is very minimal even within the common room. There are a vast number of international students here who rather create circles with individuals coming from the same ethnicity and background and thus results into a lack broader interaction. While there are attempts made by management to create events in order to promote interaction, it generally fails as only the same people turn up with each event. Therefore, if you've got your own circle of friends to hang out with at uni then socialising would be no problem but don't expect much from here.

As for the staff and management, I'd say that overall it is good for some simple services. Picking up your post and pretty much asking for anything that can be dealt with within 5-10 minutes is done immediately. If something major in your room needs fixing, however, don't expect solving it to be a speedy process.

The building itself can be considered safe. While management does stress the fact that guests need to be logged, this simply isn't done stringently enough, meaning that anyone can enter the building. Also, it is fairly simple to enter the building without notice from security though as each door is locked it does become more difficult to stray further than reception. Also, I do not understand why the lift floor selection pad had been unlocked. There's no purpose as to why someone from the 5th floor needs to be on the 28th and vice versa aside for convenience. Surely if safety and privacy is such a big factor then if individuals from those two floors want to hang out, they can spend 2 minutes picking each other up. In this case, convenience is picked over safety.

The rooms themselves have some good and bad points. They look aesthetically pleasing and the bathroom is great. Though everything is clearly cheaply made. Walls are thin and doors make unnecessary slamming noises that can be heard by adjacent rooms.

3 lifts to accommodate 400+ students is poor. Feel free to start reading a book while you wait for a lift as even when one does arrive, it is already packed. This becomes all the more frustrating when the lifts break, which happens all too frequently.

The only fault I could give this place is the lack of interaction between students! Not met a single person since living here which is a real shame, although this problem seems to be due to a huge amount of International students livinf here who don't mingle with anyone outside their circle. apart from that, everything else is faultless, from the practicality of the rooms, to the modern fresh feeling and the amazing help from all th staff!
